Cobb absorption tester

A Cobb absorption tester is a laboratory instrument used to measure the water absorptiveness of paper, paperboard, corrugated board, and other sheet materials. It is widely used in the packaging, printing, and paper industries to evaluate how much water a material can absorb within a specified time under controlled conditions. The result is usually expressed as grams of water absorbed per square meter of surface area, commonly written as g/m². This measurement is important because it helps determine how a material will perform in real-world applications where resistance to moisture is required. The basic principle of the Cobb absorption test is straightforward. A sample of the material is cut to a specified size and weighed before the test. It is then clamped securely in the tester so that a defined area is exposed. A measured volume of water is poured onto the surface, and the material is left in contact with the water for a set period, often 60 seconds, 120 seconds, or another standard duration depending on the testing method. After the contact time has elapsed, the water is removed, and excess moisture on the surface is carefully blotted off using a standardized roller, absorbent paper, or similar method. The sample is then weighed again. The increase in weight represents the amount of water absorbed. The Cobb absorption tester is valued for its simplicity, reliability, and repeatability. It allows manufacturers and quality control laboratories to compare different materials and verify whether they meet required specifications. For example, paper used for food packaging may need to have low water absorptiveness to maintain strength and appearance in humid conditions. Similarly, printing paper may need controlled absorption properties to ensure good ink performance and dimensional stability. Corrugated board and carton materials are often tested to assess their suitability for storage and transportation in environments where moisture exposure can occur.A typical Cobb tester consists of a cylindrical metal ring or chamber, a flat base plate, a clamping mechanism, and tools for removing excess water after testing. The test area is carefully defined, often 100 cm², so the results can be calculated accurately. Some designs are manual, while others include motorized or semi-automatic features to improve efficiency and consistency. Regardless of the design, proper use of the tester requires careful attention to standard procedures, including sample preparation, timing, water temperature, and blotting technique. In practice, the Cobb value provides useful information about the surface sizing, coating quality, and general moisture resistance of a material. Lower Cobb values indicate less water absorption and better resistance to moisture, while higher values indicate greater absorbency. Because the test is standardized, it is a trusted method for comparing materials from different production batches or suppliers.Overall, the Cobb absorption tester is an essential instrument for evaluating water resistance in sheet materials. Its results help ensure product quality, improve manufacturing control, and support the selection of materials for packaging and printing applications.

The Cobb Absorption Tester is a routine testing instrument designed and manufactured in accordance with the GB/T 1540-2002 standard (Paper and board — Determination of water absorption — Cobb method), also known as a paper surface absorption gravimetric tester. The instrument uses the Cobb test method to determine the surface water absorbency of various types of paper or paperboard. The entire apparatus is constructed from 304 stainless steel for exceptional durability and rust resistance. A water level line is set inside the water reservoir for convenient observation of water volume. The metal cylinder has an internal cross-sectional area of 100±0.2 cm² (corresponding inner diameter of 112.8±0.2 mm) and a height of 50 mm. A smooth metal roller is provided with a width of 200±0.5 mm and a mass of 10±0.5 kg. The blotting paper has a grammage of 200-250 g/m² and an absorption rate of 75 mm/10min. Overall dimensions are 390×280×410 mm with a weight of 20 kg. This instrument is a standard configuration device for testing the surface water absorption properties of paper and board in paper mills, quality inspection agencies, and research institutions.
