paper folding tester

A paper folding tester is a laboratory instrument used to measure the folding endurance of paper, cardboard, and related sheet materials. It evaluates how many repeated folds a specimen can withstand before it breaks. This test is important because folding endurance is closely linked to the durability, toughness, and overall quality of paper products. Industries such as printing, packaging, publishing, and paper manufacturing use this equipment to compare material performance and ensure consistency in production. The working principle of a paper folding tester is relatively straightforward. A prepared paper sample is clamped into the machine and subjected to repeated back-and-forth folding under a controlled tension. Each fold counts as one cycle, and the machine continues until the sample cracks or breaks. The result is usually recorded as the number of double folds endured by the specimen. This data helps engineers and quality control teams assess whether the paper meets required standards for strength and flexibility.A typical paper folding tester includes a sample holder, folding jaws, tension mechanism, counting system, and control panel. Some advanced models may also feature digital displays, automatic counting, preset test modes, and data storage functions. These features improve testing accuracy and make operation easier and more efficient. The tension applied during the test can often be adjusted to suit different paper grades and testing requirements. The testing process begins by cutting the paper into standard dimensions according to the relevant test method. The specimen is then conditioned in a controlled environment to ensure reliable results, since humidity and temperature can affect paper properties. After installation in the tester, the machine performs repeated folding at a fixed speed and angle. When the sample fails, the tester stops automatically or the operator records the final count manually, depending on the model.Paper folding testing is widely used for quality control and research. In manufacturing, it helps verify raw material performance, compare different pulp compositions, and monitor production stability. In research laboratories, it is used to study how fiber length, moisture content, fiber bonding, and surface treatment influence folding endurance. Paper intended for banknotes, maps, books, labels, and specialty packaging often requires high folding resistance, making this test especially valuable. The main advantages of a paper folding tester are its simplicity, reliability, and strong relevance to practical paper performance. It provides a clear numerical result that can be compared across samples and batches. However, like any test, its accuracy depends on proper sample preparation, standardized conditions, and correct machine calibration. If these factors are controlled well, the tester can deliver highly meaningful results. In summary, a paper folding tester is an essential instrument for measuring how well paper resists repeated bending and folding. It plays an important role in product evaluation, material development, and quality assurance across the paper industry.

The Automatic Folding Endurance Tester is an upgraded version of the AT-NZ-1, designed and manufactured in accordance with the national standard GB/T 457-2008 (Paper and board — Determination of folding endurance). It is specifically used for testing the folding endurance of paper and paperboard. The instrument features an imported servo motor with direct drive, completing the 135±2° folding angle conversion directly on the motor shaft, thereby eliminating the noise and wear issues associated with traditional mechanical conversion methods. The folding speed is settable at 175±10 folds/min, the folding head width is 19±1mm, and the fold radius is 0.38±0.02mm. The spring tension is adjustable from 4.91 to 14.72N, with fold gap distances selectable from 0.25-1.00mm. The measuring range is 0-99999 folds. The instrument is equipped with a touchscreen control system and Annimet testing control software V1.0, supporting tabular data processing with automatic calculation of maximum, minimum, average, and coefficient of variation, along with force-displacement and force-time curve displays. Photoelectric control technology ensures the folding clamp automatically returns to its initial position after each test. A built-in micro-printer is standard, with optional WIFI/USB/remote transmission. Overall dimensions are 380×280×430mm. This instrument is commonly used in paper mills, box plants, research institutes, and universities.
